A new study, published in theJournal of the American Medical Association, shows the enzyme is more effective than placebo.
The researchers, from the University of Pennsylvania, analyzed data from nearly 8,000 participants who took placebo or COX-2 selective painkillers for 5 years.
They compared the COX-2 enzyme and found the study’s results showed the enzyme was more effective than the placebo, compared with the placebo group.
“As a result of this new study, we believe it is important to further explore the effects of COX-2 inhibitors on cardiovascular outcomes,” said lead author Dr. Daniel Zucconi of Duke University.
The new analysis was funded by Pfizer, maker of Celebrex, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002.
Pfizer had previously said its COX-2 inhibitors were more effective than the placebo in people taking a placebo.
The study also found the enzyme was less effective than the placebo.
